How did the new construction hold up in the Dec. 3, 2007 storm?

On Dec. 3, 2007 the region experienced intense rainstorms, with some areas registering over 4 inches of precipitation in a 24-hour period. Shoreline, like many other cities in the area, experienced substantial urban flooding.

King County, Frank Coluccio Construction Company, and the City of Shoreline staff inspected the city's stormwater detention pond after the event. The stormwater pond performed according to design, and did not get damaged by the Dec. 3 storm. The City of Shoreline responded to storm-related bank erosion downstream that deposited sediment in Hidden Lake. More information about the city's plans for removing the sediment can be found in the February 2008 issue of Currents newsletter.

Rainwater in the sewer system increased volumes beyond the capacity of the existing system in the Boeing Creek Park area. To protect the Hidden Lake Pump Station and surrounding properties from damage, excess flows were diverted through an emergency outfall into Puget Sound for 12 hours.

The new underground storage pipe in Boeing Creek Park was not yet in service during the storm. During future storms, the underground storage pipe will store peak flows limiting overflows like those experienced as a result the Dec. 3 storm.

To protect public health and the environment, the King County Wastewater Treatment Division determined it must replace the aging Hidden Lake Pump Station and 12,000 feet of the nearby Boeing Creek trunk sewer in west Shoreline.

King County also needed to build an underground wastewater storage pipe in Boeing Creek Park to help limit overflows to nearby Puget Sound. The 500,000-gallon storage pipe will store wastewater temporarily during peak storms. Construction is expected to run from summer 2006 through spring 2009.
