Innovative Design at the West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, Seattle, WA

The 32-acre West Point Treatment Plant is on the shores of Puget Sound next to the 534-acre Discovery Park, Seattle's largest and most natural park. Situated on Magnolia Bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Discovery Park offers spectacular views of both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges.

To address concerns raised by the public, including park visitors and neighbors, the County included trails, native landscaping, a wetland and retaining walls in the expansion of the West Point plant.

Large walls were constructed and extensively planted with native trees, shrubs and ground covers. The walls were styled after the nearby coastal bluffs and were designed both to hide the treatment plant and to provide security.

Now the native plantings cascade over and hide the walls. The plant is almost entirely unseen from the water and from many places within the park.
